Simple appliance care that can help

A few practical habits for the appliances you use every day.

Some appliance problems begin with everyday buildup, a blocked vent, or the way a load is arranged. These basic checks may help you avoid an unnecessary repair visit. Start with the care instructions for your model; they take priority over general tips.

If something still isn’t right, call or text Floyd at 562-209-0126. Tell him the appliance, what’s happening, any error code, and your city or neighborhood. Brand and model details are helpful if you have them.

Refrigerator: leave room for cold air to circulate

Check that food packages aren’t covering the air vents inside the refrigerator or freezer. Make sure a container or drawer isn’t preventing the door from closing. Wipe crumbs and dirt from the door seal using the cleaning method in your owner’s manual. If the seal is torn or cooling problems continue, contact Floyd. Washer: follow the cleaning cycle instructions

Detergent residue and dirt can collect inside a washer. Check your manual for the recommended cleaning cycle, cleaner, and dispenser care. Run the cleaning cycle with an empty drum as directed. Use only the cleaning products and amounts specified for your model; don’t mix cleaning products. Manufacturer guidance on washer care

Dryer: clean the lint screen with every load

Remove lint from the screen before or after every load. The exhaust duct and outside vent also need periodic cleaning to keep airflow clear. If clothes take much longer to dry or the dryer seems unusually hot, stop using it and have the cause checked. Don’t move a heavy dryer or disconnect a gas line to reach the vent. Dishwasher: check the filter care instructions

Some dishwashers have a filter the owner can remove and clean; others use a different design. Look up the cleaning instructions for your exact model before taking anything apart. Handle debris carefully because it may contain sharp pieces. If you can’t identify an owner-accessible filter, contact Floyd instead of forcing a part loose. Oven and range: deal with spills after cooling

Turn the controls off and let the oven and cooktop cool before cleaning. Follow your model’s instructions for each surface and its cleaning cycle. A product suitable for one finish may damage another, and some ovens specifically prohibit oven cleaner. Regular light cleaning helps keep spills from building up. Manufacturer guidance on range cleaning

Water leaks: get help with the shutoff

Stop using a leaking appliance. If you need help safely shutting off the appliance’s water supply, contact a plumber. Don’t move a heavy appliance to reach a valve. Don’t touch electrical equipment that is wet or surrounded by water. Manufacturer guidance on water shutoff valves · Electrical safety around water

When to stop and get help

These tips are routine care, and don’t require opening electrical panels, testing live wiring, bypassing locks, or disconnecting gas lines. Stop using an appliance that leaks, sparks, overheats, or smells like burning. Keep clear of water around electrical connections. If there is fire or immediate danger, leave and call 911.

If you suspect a gas leak, leave the area immediately without operating switches or using a phone nearby. From a safe location, call 911 and your gas utility. Gas safety guidance
